The hostages and their guards
Reactor Retrieval is the eighth contract for the Allied Nations and the second contract for them in the Northern Province of North Korea in the third act of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.
Overview[]
The contract involves locating and then rescuing Allied inspectors being held at a North Korean reactor site and then escorting them to the Allied outpost west of the site.

The Contract[]
For this contract you must rescue the inspectors within 10 minutes, or they will be executed. After the initial dialogue at the beginning of the contract the 10 minute timer will begin. Shortly afterwards you will be informed of the bonus objective to keep all three inspectors alive. The inspectors are being held at the Yongbyon Reactors, one of the area from the previous contract. The Allied outpost is located west of the reactors, on the long road leading to Chongju near the river. There is an M3 APC, many AN soldiers, and various weapons including an Anti-Tank Missile Launcher, Sniper Rifle, and Covert SMG, plus some infinitely respawning supplies. You may take any of these if you wish.
The reactor where the inspectors are being kept
The compound with the inspectors is heavily guarded. There are three ZSU-57s, a T-62 tank, and many soldiers, some of which are carrying RPGs. Note that there are NK civilians present in the area, so watch the crossfire. Also take note that if you personally kill any of the inspectors you will instantly fail the contract, even if by accident. If you go for an all out assault, the alarm will be tripped and the two NK Elite guards will open fore on the inspectors, killing them.
The path leading to the NK sniper
Alternatively, if you drive towards the reactor from the AN outpost, you will pass a bridge. As you pass you'll see an NK Transport Truck drive off the road and park on the hill, while three KPA soldiers run up the hill. Take them out and follow the path they were taking. You'll come to a cliff with a lone NK sniper. Take him out and take his sniper rifle. Call in a tank buster on the tanks and then quickly snipe the two guards. The surviving members of the base will all go for you, while the inspectors remain relatively safe. Grab any vehicle capable of carrying three passengers (the M3 at the AN outpost, a nearby transport truck, or an Mi-35 should do the trick) and pick up the inspectors. There will be a small NK roadblock on the road leading back to the outpost with a single ZSU, an officer, and some soldiers. Deal with them and continue driving towards the outpost. when you arrive you'll find it under attack by three Sungri Scouts and a T-62. Help destroy these forces and then drop off the inspectors when finished.
The battle at the AN outpost
The contract value is $80,000, plus $75,000 for returning all three inspectors to the outpost alive. Completing this contract will make the Tank Buster available for purchase from the Merchant of Menace. Intel regarding the location of the Ten of Hearts will also be given.

The player enters the HQ
- Colonel Garrett: This is the man/woman I've been waiting for. If anyone's going to get my boys back, it's you. The Ace of Hearts, General Chul Kang, had his men capture some of my inspectors. Now they're trying to ransom them back to me. If I have to wait for approval before I can go after those men, Kang will get the time he needs to finish Song's nukes and those inspectors will be dead.
The player remains in the HQ
- Colonel Garrett: I tell you I'm pretty fed up with having inspectors crawling around here like root weevils.
The player still remains in the HQ
- Colonel Garrett: Kang's men took out the escort I sent with 'em. And those were my boys. Feel free to be extra indiscriminate with your ordnance.
The player continues to remain in the HQ
- Colonel Garrett: You won't leave those inspectors hanging, right, soldier?!
The player accepts the contract
- Fiona: This should be fun, huh? They're likely to just shoot those men the moment they spot you running around in the area.
- Fiona: You better get moving. You don't have a lot of time to get to the inspectors.
A short time after the first conversation
- Fiona: Check your email. We just received word they're offering a bonus is we bring all the inspectors home in one piece
If the timer reaches 1 minute
- Fiona: Not much time left! Hurry up and get to those men!
If the timer runs out and the inspectors are executed
- Fiona: All the inspectors are dead. That's just great. Let's get out of there.
If the player approaches the reactor in a helicopter
- Fiona: It's probably not a good idea to get too close to the site with that chopper. The satellite shows NK anti-air vehicles in the area.
The player approaches the reactor
- Fiona: There are the inspectors. You may want to get rid of those guards next to them before things get too hot in there.
If the alarm is tripped before the guards are killed
- Fiona: They're going to kill them!
If an inspector is killed by the guards
- Inspector: Oh god, he's dead! He's dead!!!
- Fiona: One of the inspectors has been killed! You have to make sure they stay safe or we might as well knock off for the day!
If a second inspector is killed
- Fiona: Another one of the inspectors is down! Keep your eye on the last one or we're finished!
If all inspectors are killed
- Fiona: All the inspectors are dead. That's just great. Let's get out of there.
A short time after the alarm is tripped
- Fiona: More North Korean troops are inbound to the site.
The inspectors are rescued
- Inspector: I didn't think we'd make it out alive. Thanks for saving us!
- Fiona: More bad news! The satellite shows North Korean forces have setup road blocks to stop anyone from leaving the area.
The player returns at least one inspectors to the outpost
- Fiona: Beautiful! The intel those inspectors gathered is worth a lot to the allies. They've already wired the money to our account. Another job well done.
If the player rescued all inspectors
- Fiona: Seems they're extremely happy that all the inspectors made it back.
